Rose House

Conventional wisdom says that a state-of-the-art, energy-efficient house isn’t cost-effective to create. Challenging this misconception is the Rose House: an Energy-Star-compliant modern home built on a strict budget.

ALM Design Studio, in cooperation with the homeowner and builder, stuck to established building practices while embracing energy savings wherever possible. Structural and blow-in insulation were selected for their affordably high R-factor. An open stairway creates a central ventilation stack that efficiently cools the home during warmer months. Structural Insulated Sheathing (SIS), locally sourced hardwoods, and cement board siding provided high-quality, low-cost ways to meet our goals, aesthetic and environmental.

With the construction budget tightly controlled, funds were left for finishing: an open hardwood stairway, vibrant interior finishes, and arts and crafts details that fit the client’s taste. The completed home is a model of comfort and efficiency, saving the owners money now without losing any of the investment when it’s time to sell.
